SAN MARCOS—The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team participated in the Texas State Tournament over the weekend. On Friday, the Cardinals faced #9 nationally ranked Arizona State. On Saturday, the Red and Black competed against Tulsa University and Texas State.
Match 1: ASU (3), UIW (0)
Set 1: UIW 11 (0), ASU 25 (1)
The Sun Devils opened set one on a 15-6 run. ASU never trailed as they controlled the set to take a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: UIW 21 (0), ASU 25 (2)
The Cardinals opened set two on a 3-0 run, taking their first lead of the match. UIW and ASU exchanged points throughout the set, with the Sun Devils' biggest lead not coming until set point.
Set 3: UIW 14 (0), ASU 25 (3)
ASU opened set three on a 5-0 run to take an early lead. The Sun Devils used a late 5-0 run to shut the door on the Cardinals.
Kyla Malone led the Cardinals in kills with eight. Calissa Allison finished with a team-leading 17 assists. Ashton Rogers led UIW in digs with 12. Kade Thomas led the Red and Black in blocks with two.
Match 2: TU (3), UIW (2)
Set 1: UIW 14 (0), TU 25 (1)
The Hurricanes used a late 6-0 run to pull away from the Cardinals in set one. TU led by as many as 11 before taking the set.
Set 2: UIW 25 (1), TU 17 (1)
Set two was controlled by UIW and a series of runs. The Cardinals used three separate 4-0 runs to pull away from the Hurricanes and even things up at 1-1.
Set 3: UIW 25 (2), TU 21 (1)
The Cardinals carried their momentum from set two into set three. UIW and TU exchanged points throughout, but the Cardinals pulled away late to secure the set.
Set 4: UIW 18 (2), TU 25 (2)
UIW led by as many as five points to open the set. However, the Hurricanes used an 8-0 run to force a fifth set.
Set 5: UIW 10 (2), TU 15 (3)
The Hurricanes were able to carry the momentum of set four into set five to complete the comeback.
Malone led the Cardinals in kills with 12 and in digs with 19. Allison finished with a team-leading 31 assists. Vanessa Eregie finished with a match-leading six blocks.
Match 3: UIW (0), TXST (3)
Set 1: UIW 24 (0), TXST 26 (1)
After falling behind by four late, the Cardinals used a 4-0 run to tie things up at 24-24. The Bobcats were able to regroup and record the final two points to take the set.
Set 2: UIW 23 (0), TXST 25 (2)
Both teams went back and forth to start the set. After playing to a 9-9 tie, the Cardinals went on a 3-0 run to take a lead. However, TXST responded with two 3-0 runs to pull away late.
Set 3: UIW 21 (0), TXST 25 (3)
TXST controlled the set, pulling away late after a 4-0 run.
Malone led the Cardinals in kills with ten. Calissa Allison finished with a team-leading 26 assists. Ashton Rogers recorded a match-high 20 digs. K. Thomas finished with a team-leading three blocks.
UIW is back in action at the Red Raider Classic this upcoming weekend. The Cardinals will take on the University of Mississippi, the University at Albany, and the host, Texas Tech.
