CORPUS CHRISTI, TX. - The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped games one and two of their three-game series against the University of Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Cardinals finished off the series with a win on Sunday at Chapman Field to pick up their third conference win of the season. Â
Game 1: UIW 6, TAMCC 10Â
Rey Mendoza started the scoring for the Cardinals, crushing a solo homer over the right field wall to give UIW a 1-0 lead in the first. In the home half of the first, the Islanders scored two on a two-run homer to take a 2-1 lead.Â
Kegan Magee tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth on an RBI single up the middle. Later in the inning, Corpus retook the lead on a two-run homer, bringing the score to 4-2.Â
The Islanders scored four in the fifth to extend their lead to 8-2.Â
Tyler Cowan sent a solo homer over the right field wall to cut the deficit to 8-3 in the sixth. Later in the inning, the Islanders scored two runs to extend their lead to 10-3.Â
In the top of the eighth, Rob Liddington Jr. crushed his team-leading 13th homer of the year to bring the final score to 10-6.Â
Game 2: UIW 5, TAMCC 10Â
Mendoza started game two with an RBI double in the first, giving UIW an early 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, the Islanders scored two to take a 2-1 lead.Â
TAMCC added a run in the second to extend their lead to 3-1.Â
Cowan made it a one-run game in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly.Â
After a scoreless sixth inning, the Cardinals retook the lead in the seventh. Thomas Lyssy homered to tie the game at 3-3, and Ryan Scott singled in a run to give UIW a 4-3 lead.Â
The Islanders drove in seven runs in the eighth to retake the lead, 10-4.Â
Scott drove in Mendoza on a groundout in the ninth to bring the final score to 10-5.Â
Game 3: UIW 9, TAMCC 3Â Â
Like the previous games, the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. AJ Herrera drove in the game's first run on a sacrifice fly. Cowan later singled in two runs to extend UIW's lead to 3-0. Â
TAMCC got on the board in the third to cut the deficit to 3-1.Â
Lyssy singled in a run in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-1.Â
A two-run homer by the Islanders in the seventh brought them within one, 4-3. Â
After entering the game as a pinch hitter, Jake Weaver crushed a two-run homer out of the ballpark to extend the Cardinals' lead to 6-3. Â
UIW added three insurance runs in the ninth to bring the final score to 9-3. Â
Jackson Elizondo was phenomenal on the mound, giving up three runs on six hits over six innings. Bruno Robles finished the game, allowing one hit in three innings of relief work to earn the save.Â
The Cardinals return to Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B, to host UTRGV this weekend. Â
