SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team was swept by conference-leading UTRGV at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The Cardinals celebrated 16 seniors following Sunday's matchup for Senior Day.
Game 1: UTRGV 14, UIW 10
The Vaqueros scored four in the first to take a 4-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the Cardinals scored two to cut the deficit to 4-2. Rob Liddington Jr. started the scoring with an RBI single up the middle. Ryan Scott later singled in Liddington to close out the third inning.
In the fourth inning, UTRGV scored two runs to extend their lead to 6-2. UIW responded in the bottom half of the fourth by scoring two runs to pull within two, 6-4. Gray Bane hit a solo home run over the left field wall, and Thomas Lyssy drove in a run with an RBI double down the right field line.
The Cardinals scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 6-6. Jake Weaver recorded an RBI in the fifth, while Liddington singled in a run during the sixth to equalize the score.
UTRGV scored two runs in the seventh and six in the eighth to pull ahead, 14-6.
Daniel Calabrese and Weaver homered in the eighth and ninth to bring the final score to 14-10.
Game 2: UTRGV 13, UIW 10
UIW struck first, scoring three runs in the first inning. Rey Mendoza doubled in a run, and Ryan Scott followed with a two-run homer to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.
The Vaqueros got on the board in the second with a solo homer, bringing the score to 3-1.
UTRGV scored four runs in the third to take a 5-3 lead.
A home run in the fourth inning extended UTRGV's lead to 6-3. Later in the same inning, Tyler Cowan hit a homer to narrow the deficit to 6-4.
Mendoza narrowed the deficit to 6-5 in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.
The Vaqueros scored four runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 10-5.
A two-run seventh inning and a three-run eighth inning tied the game at 10-10 entering the ninth. Liddington tripled in two runs in the seventh to pull within three, 10-7. Weaver doubled in two, and Gray Bane singled in Weaver to tie the game entering the ninth.
UTRGV scored three runs in the ninth to bring the final score to 13-10.
Game 3: UTRGV 16, UIW 5
The Vaqueros jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Tyler Cowan doubled in a run in the bottom of the first, bringing the score to 2-1.
UTRGV drove in four runs in the second to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Ryder Hernandez homered in the home half of the second to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Two solo home runs in the top of the third extended the lead to 8-2.
In the fourth, Rey Mendoza crushed a three-run homer to pull the Cardinals within three, 8-5.
A solo home run for the Vaqueros in the fifth and an RBI double extended the lead to 10-5.
UTRGV scored one in the sixth, one in the seventh, and four in the eighth to bring the final score to 16-5.
UIW will host UTSA this Tuesday for a midweek matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
