EDINBURG, TX. - The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, 10-2, at UTRGV Baseball Stadium on Tuesday evening. EJ Garcia (4-4) took home the win, pitching five scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Vaqueros took the lead in the third, scoring on a sacrifice fly to pull ahead 1-0.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Daniel Calabrese put UIW on the board with a two-run homer to left to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead entering the home half of the fifth.
In the sixth, the Cardinals scored five runs to take a commanding 7-1 lead. AJ Herrera got the scoring started on a solo homer to left field. Thomas Lyssy stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and drove in all three runs on a double down the right field line. Rob Liddington Jr. later singled home Lyssy to extend the lead to 7-1.
UIW scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Tyler Cowan scored on a wild pitch and Ryder Hernandez drove in a run on an RBI single to cap the scoring in the seventh.
Liddington crushed his team-leading twelfth homer of the season in the eighth to extend the Cardinal lead to 10-1.
UTRGV scored a run in the ninth to bring the final score to 10-2.
Garcia pitched five innings, allowing no runs on five hits, while striking out five batters in five innings of work.
The Cardinals continue their south Texas road trip, heading to Corpus Christi this upcoming weekend for a conference series.
