SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Texas State, 7-6, on Tuesday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. Jake Weaver delivered the walk-off home run in the ninth with two outs and nobody on base. Jonah Posey (1-0) was phenomenal out of the bullpen, getting the last eight outs to earn his first win as a Cardinal.
The Bobcats struck first, hanging four runs in the top of the first. Later in the inning, Daniel Calabrese sent a solo shot over the right field wall to bring the score to 4-1 entering the second.
Tyler Cowan doubled in a run in the home half of the second to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Texas State extended its lead to 5-2 in the fourth, scoring a run on a single to left field. Later in the inning, the Cardinals pulled within one, scoring two to bring the score to 5-4. Rob Liddington Jr. crushed his team-leading sixth homer of the year, and Cowan singled in a run to pull the Red and Black back in the game.
Cowan tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth on his third RBI on the day. JD Gregson later doubled in a run to take their first lead, 6-5.
The Bobcats tied the game at 6-6 on a solo homer to right in the eighth.
Coming in as a pinch-hitter, Weaver sent a deep fly ball over the right field wall to bring the final score to 7-6.
UIW will visit Grambling State tomorrow for the team's second midweek game of the week. First pitch for Wednesday's game is set for 6:00 p.m.
