SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team lost in ten innings to Lamar University, 8-5, on Friday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
Gray Bane started the scoring with his first homer of the year in the second. Bane's solo shot gave The Word a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals used a Rey Mendoza RBI single in the third to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Red and Black put up two runs in the fourth to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Ryder Hernandez scored an unearned run on a fielder's choice, and Rob Liddington Jr. singled in Kegan Magee to cap the scoring in the fourth.
Lamar got on the board in the sixth on an RBI double to center to pull within three, 4-1.
Two solo homers in the top of the seventh pulled LU within one, 4-3.
In the eighth, Lamar took its first lead of the game, 5-4. LU tied the game on a passed ball and took the lead on a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Liddington tied the game at 5-5 on an RBI single.
In the tenth, Lamar scored three to bring the final score to 8-5.
UIW and Lamar will be back in action at Sullivan Field for game two tomorrow at 2 p.m.
