THIBODAUX, LA - The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team won game three against Nicholls State 4-3 at Didier Field on Sunday afternoon. Jackson Elizondo (3-3) was stellar on the mound for the Cardinals. Braelin Pillot (3) recorded the save, getting the final out in the ninth with the winning run on base.
The Cardinals scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the first despite recording a hit. The UIW offense drew three walks and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, the Colonels scored on an error to tie the game at 1-1.
UIW retook the lead in the fourth, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Thomas Lyssy drove in the go-ahead run on a single to right. Rob Liddington Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk, and Rey Mendoza singled in a run to cap the scoring for the Cardinals.
The Colonels wouldn't get back on the board until the ninth, scoring two in the final inning to bring the final score to 4-3.
Elizondo was stellar on the mound, tossing a near-complete game. In 8 2/3 innings of work, he allowed just three runs on four hits while striking out five. Pillot shut the door in the ninth with the tying run at second and the winning run on first.
The Cardinals' road trip continues Tuesday against Prairie View A&M. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
