PRAIRIE VIEW, TX - The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Prairie View A&M University, 8-7 at Tankersley Field on Tuesday afternoon. Trevor Ezparza (1-0) won his first game as a Cardinal. Adam Byrd (1) recorded the save, getting the final seven outs to shut the door on the Panthers' comeback.
The Panthers scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the first, scoring on a sacrifice fly.
Tyler Cowan laid down a sacrifice bunt in the third to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the inning, an RBI double down the left field line gave PVAMU a 2-1 lead.
The Cardinals put up a six spot in the fourth to take a commanding 7-2 lead. Thomas Lyssy tied the game at 2-2 on a sacrifice fly to left. Gray Bane drove in two on a single up the middle. Kegan Magee kept the inning going on an RBI single to left center, and Daniel Calabrese capped the scoring on a three-run double.
PVAMU scored one on a single to right, bringing the score to 7-3 after playing five.
Lyssy recorded his second sacrifice fly of the day in the seventh to extend the Cardinals' lead to 8-3.
The Panthers scored four runs in the ninth to bring the final score to 8-7.
Ezparza allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two batters to earn the win. Byrd entered in the seventh with the bases loaded and stranded them all. He struck out five of his seven outs to close out the game for the Red and Black.
The Cardinals' road trip ends Wednesday against Texas State at Bobcat Field. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
