SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team lost game one of their three-game set to the University of New Orleans, 18-9, on Friday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
The Privateers struck first, hanging three runs in the top of the first. In the second UNO used a grand slam to extend the lead to 7-0.
Jake Weaver drew a walk with the bases loaded, and Tyler Cowan singled in a run in the third to cut the deficit to 7-2.
UNO scored three runs in the fourth to push the lead to 10-2. Later in the inning, the Cardinals hung four runs to pull within four, 10-6. Daniel Calabrese and Rob Liddington Jr. picked up RBIs on groundouts. With two outs, Ryder Hernandez and Cowan each singled in a run to end the inning.
The Privateers responded with a six-run fifth inning to take a 16-6 lead. In the home half of the fifth Liddington picked up his second RBI of the day. Rey Mendoza crushed a two-run homer to right center to cut the deficit to 16-9.
New Orleans scored one in the seventh and one in the eighth to bring the final score to 18-9.
UIW and UNO will be back at Sullivan Field tomorrow for game two. First pitch for Saturday's game is set for 2:05 p.m.
