SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped game one of conference play to Houston Christian University, 14-10 on Friday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead on a two-run homer in the first.
In the third, HCU homered over the left field fence to extend the lead to 3-0. In the home half of the third, Thomas Lyssy crushed a solo home run to pull within two, 3-1. Later in the inning Rob Liddington Jr. hit the Cardinals second solo home run of the inning, bringing the score to 3-2.
The Huskies scored two in the fourth and two in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-2. Later in the inning, with two men on Rey Mendoza sent a fly ball over the right field fence to pull within two, 7-5.
In the sixth HCU hung four runs to pull ahead, 11-5.
Ryder Hernandez homered in the seventh to cut the deficit to 11-6.
A three-run eighth inning for the Huskies extended the lead to 14-6.
The Cardinals scored four runs in the ninth to bring the final score to 14-10. Hernandez singled in a run to get the scoring started. Liddington drove in two on a triple to right center. Daniel Calabrese singled to right to drive in Liddington to cap the scoring.
UIW and HCU are back in action on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
