SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team defeated Northwestern State University, 71-64, on Thursday night at the Prather Coliseum. With the win, the Cardinals moved to 11-0 against the Demons under head coach Jeff Dow.
The Cardinals had four players score in double digits. Jorja Elliott and Destiny Whitaker led the Cardinals in scoring with 13 points. Madison Cockrelland and Brynn Lusby scored 12 and 10 points off the bench, respectively. As a team, the Cardinals tallied 10 steals and two blocks on the defensive end.
Both UIW and NWST got off to a hot start. The Cardinals shot 50% from the field while the Demons shot at a 40% clip. After one, the game was tied at 17-17.
The Cardinals continued to shoot the ball well in the second quarter, scoring 20 points while shooting 56% from the floor. UIW's defense suffocated the Demons, who scored only nine points in the second quarter. At the break, UIW led NWST 37-26.
The Demons came out of the break hot, but the Cardinals kept the pressure on the Demons, shooting 50% from the field in the third quarter. NWST outscored UIW 20-16, but the Cardinals still led 53-46 entering the fourth.
The only quarter the Cardinals didn't shoot 50% or better was the fourth, when they shot 43% from the floor. The Demons stayed hot in the fourth, but it was too little, too late, as UIW came away with a 71-64 win.
UIW is on the road to close out the regular season at East Texas A&M on Saturday.
