COMMERCE, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team defeated East Texas A&M University, 74-65 on Saturday afternoon at the Field House. With the win and UTRGV's loss, the Cardinals clinched a first round by and the fourth seed at this year's Southland Conference Tournament.
The Cardinals had six out of eight players score in double-digits. Brynn Lusby dominated the paint, leading all players with 17 points off the bench. Destiny Whitaker was the Cardinals second leading scorer, recording 12 points off the bench. Myra Bell led the starters with 11 points, and Jorja Elliott and Raimi McCrary tallied ten points in the win. As a team, the Cardinals tallied nine steals and five blocks on the defensive end.
Both UIW and ETAMU got off to solid starts. The Cardinals shot 50% from the field while draining 2-3 from beyond the arc. After one, the game was tied at 16-16.
The Cardinals continued to shoot the ball well in the second quarter, putting up 16 points. UIW's defense held the Lions to 14 in the quarter to bring the score to 32-30 at the break.
The Cardinals came out of the break hot, scoring 21 in the third. ETAMU was outscored by UIW 21-18. The Lions entered the fourth quarter down 53-48.
UIW replicated their 21-point third quarter in the fourth to pull away late. The Cardinals ran away with the game in the fourth, to bring the final score to 74-65.
UIW is set for the Southland Conference Tournament starting next Monday. The Cardinals will face the winner of game one between Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Northwestern State University on Tuesday at 11 a.m. During the regular season UIW swept both the Islanders and Demons.
