SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word Women's Tennis team faced two tough matchups this week, battling against SMU on Sunday in Dallas and hosting Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday. While the results didn't go UIW's way, the team put up strong performances and showed they can compete against high-level opponents.
The Cardinals took on a ranked SMU team (57) in Dallas, fighting hard in a match that was closer than the final score suggests. The highlight of the day came in doubles, where Lyric Bonilla and Estefania Gonzalez secured an impressive win at No. 1 doubles. Gonzalez also continued her strong play in singles, winning her first set before the match was clinched.
Back at home on Tuesday, UIW put up a strong fight against Louisiana-Lafayette in a tight 4-2 loss. The match was highly competitive, with the Cardinals creating multiple opportunities to secure the win. The team showed resilience and played at a high level, pushing their opponents until the very end..
Next up, the Cardinals will play their first Southland Conference match against Lamar on March 1st in Beaumont, Texas.
