SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team completed the sweep over Texas Southern, 14-10, on Sunday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. Hunter Hargett (1-0) picked up his first win of the season coming out of the bullpen to close it out for the Cardinals.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead after scoring on an RBI single in the first and a wild pitch in the second. Later in the second, Ryder Hernandez put UIW on the board with a sacrifice fly. Rey Mendoza doubled down the right field line to give the Red and Black its first lead, 3-2. Jake Weaver ended the scoring on a two-run single to center to bring the score to 5-2 through two innings.
In the third, TSU homered over the left field fence to pull within two, 5-3. In the home half of the third, Rob Liddington Jr. walked in a run with the bases loaded. Daniel Calabrese later singled up the middle to drive in two runs to extend the lead to 8-3.
After a scoreless fourth, Liddington singled in a run to push the Cardinal lead to 9-3 in the fifth.
Texas Southern began to claw its way back into the game, scoring five in the sixth to pull within two, 10-8.
The Tigers tied things up in the seventh on a two-run single up the middle.
In his first at-bat as a Cardinal, Ryan Martinez came in as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth and doubled in the go-ahead run on an RBI double down the right field line. UIW tacked on three more runs in the inning to put the game out of reach. Hernandez singled in two runs, and Liddington singled in Hernandez to bring the final score to 14-10.
The Cardinals used five total pitchers, with Hargett getting credit for the win by finishing the final two innings.
UIW goes on the road for their first road test of the season on Tuesday. The Cardinals visit the Longhorns at Disch-Falk Field with a 6:30 p.m. game time.
