Baseball Secures Series Win to Improve to 6-1

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Texas Southern 8-4 on Saturday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. Jackson Elizondo (1-0) picked up his first win of the season.     

JD Gregson started the scoring in the second on a two-run single to left.  

In the third, UIW added two more runs, scoring on an RBI single from Ryan Scott and an error. 

The Tigers got on the board with a solo home run in the fourth. Later in the inning, Rey Mendoza singled up the middle to bring the score to 5-1.   

Texas Southern responded in the fifth, scoring on a groundout. Ryder Hernandez immediately got that run back in the home half of the fifth on an RBI single, bringing the score to 6-2. 

In the sixth, TSU pulled within three, scoring on a squeeze bunt. UIW scored their seventh and eighth runs of the game in the sixth, scoring on an RBI single by Tyler Cowan and an RBI double by Keegan Magee to pull ahead 8-3.  

The Tigers added a run in the ninth to bring the final score to 8-4. 

Elizondo went five innings, allowing two earned on five hits while striking out five batters.  

UIW and TSU are back in action at Sullivan Field on Sunday to close out the series. The first pitch for Sunday is set for 1:05 p.m.
