SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Texas Southern 18-1 on Friday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. Josh Salinas (2-0) pitched a complete game to earn his second win of the season.
The Cardinals poured it on in the first and never gave the Tigers a chance to climb back into the game. UIW put up ten runs in the first, starting the scoring on a Rob Liddington Jr. solo shot on the second pitch of the inning. Ryan Scott singled in two, and Jake Weaver drove in three on a single and an error. The Cardinals had a 5-0 lead before TSU could record an out. A few batters after Ryder Hernandez drove in a run on a groundout to third, Rey Mendoza stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. Mendoza's first homer of the season was a grand slam over the right field fence to bring the score to 10-0.
The Tigers put up their lone run in the second, scoring on a sacrifice after an error put the runner in scoring position.
Thomas Lyssy drove in two on a single to right center. Later in the third, Tyler Cowan scored on an error to extend the lead to 13-1.
The Cardinals added a run in the fourth on a groundout by Cowan.
Two bases loaded walks and a two-run single by Liddington in the sixth brought the final score to 18-1.
Salinas was lights out on the mound, pitching a complete game shutout. He went seven innings, allowing no earned runs on four hits while striking out five.
UIW and TSU are back in action at Sullivan Field on Saturday. The first pitch for Saturday is set for 2:05 p.m.
