SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Abilene Christian 11-7 on Tuesday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. EJ Garcia (2-0) earned his second win to open the 2025 campaign.     

The Wildcats came out strong, driving in three runs in the top of the first. UIW responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-3 lead. Jake Weaver tripled in two to set up the game-tying RBI double by Tyler Cowan. Thomas Lyssy singled in Cowan to take the lead, and Ryder Hernandez singled in Lyssy to end the first.   

ACU quickly tied the game up in the second, scoring on an RBI double and a balk.  

Abilene Christian retook the lead in the third on an RBI single up the middle. The Cardinals hung five runs in the home half of the third to go up 10-6. Rob Liddington Jr. tied the game at 6-6 on an RBI single to left center. After a walk loaded the bases, Rey Mendoza cleared the bases on a double down the left field line. Later in the inning, Weaver doubled in Mendoza to extend the lead to 10-6 through three.    

The Wildcats drove in a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to pull within three, 10-7. 

UIW scored the game's final run in the seventh on a wild pitch to bring the final score to 11-7. 

Garcia pitched six innings out of the bullpen, allowing one run while striking out three. 

UIW is back in action at Sullivan Field all weekend when they host Texas Southern University. The first pitch for Friday is set for 2:05 p.m.
