SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team won games two and three of their four-game set against Saint Peter's on Saturday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. EJ Garcia (1-0) and Ryan Schlotzhauer (1-0) were named the winning pitchers for games two and three, respectively. Hunter Hargett recorded the save (1) in game three.
Game 1:
The Peacocks got on the board first in the second on a solo shot. Later in the inning, Ryan Scott got the run back on a homer (2) to right center. A bases-loaded walk by Daniel Calabrese and a three-run double by Rey Mendoza put UIW up 5-1 after two.
Saint Peter's responded with a five-run third to retake the lead at 6-5.
Calabrese doubled in three in the fourth to put the Red and Black ahead 8-6. Scott extended the lead on a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 9-6 through four.
UIW extended its lead in the fifth on an RBI single from Mendoza. Rob Liddington Jr. later stole home, bringing the score to 11-6.
Ryder Hernandez got in the mix with a two-run double to left center in the sixth.
The Cardinals ended game one of our double-header early, scoring three in the seventh to win 16-6. Scott drove in two on a two-run triple and later scored on a fielder's choice to end the game.
Game 2:
Saint Peter's jumped out to a three-run lead in the first scoring on a single, walk and sacrifice fly.
Scott put the Cardinals on the board in the second with a two-run homer (3) to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Peacocks responded by scoring two in the third to extend the lead to 5-2. Later in the inning UIW put up four runs to take its first lead of the game. Calabrese and Mendoza each doubled in a run to pull within one score. Mendoza later tied the game on an error by the Peacocks. The Cardinals later took a 6-5 lead on a groundout by Jake Weaver.
Saint Peter's later scored three runs in the fourth to reclaim the lead, 8-6. Later in the fourth, Liddington doubled in a run to pull UIW within one. Two batters later, Mendoza doubled in two to retake the lead. The Cardinals added four more runs that inning to take a 13-8 lead into the fifth.
In the fifth Scott hit his third homer (4) of the day to extend UIW's lead to 15-8.
The Peacocks scored one run in the sixth and two in the eighth to pull within four, 15-11. The Cardinals scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to bring the final score to 16-11.
The Cardinals and Peacocks finish off the series at Sullivan Field tomorrow. The first pitch for the series finale is set for 12:05 p.m.
