SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team won on opening day against Saint Peter's University 12-2 in eight innings on Friday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. Josh Salinas (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Cardinals. Braelin Pilot recorded the save (1) in his UIW debut.
Ryan Scott got the scoring started in the second with a two-run double down the left field line. Later in the inning, Tyler Cowan and Ryder Hernandez each drove in a run to bring the score to 4-0. Following Hernandez's sacrifice fly, Rob Liddington Jr. hit his first homer of the day over the left field wall to give UIW a 5-0 lead after playing two.
Scott cracked a three-run homer over the left field wall to extend the Cardinals' lead to 8-0 in the third.
The Peacocks got on the board on a single to left field in the fourth. UIW quickly got that run back on Liddington's second home run of the day. Daniel Calabrese later tripled and scored to put the Cardinals up 11-1 in the fourth.
Saint Peter's brought the score to 11-2 in the seventh on a solo home run.
Scott ended the ballgame early on an RBI double down the left field line in the eighth inning.
Salinas allowed one run on three hits while striking out five batters through five innings of work. Pilot surrendered one run on two hits while striking out three batters through the final three innings.
The Cardinals and Peacocks will return to Sullivan Field tomorrow for a doubleheader. The first pitch for game one is set for 12:05 p.m.
