SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team defeated the Houston Christian Huskies on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.
Raimi McCrary led all scorers in points with 18. The Cardinals leading scorer of the year, Jorja Elliott, added 13, while Myra Bell finished with 12. UIW's defense was stellar all afternoon, finishing with 14 steals and eight blocks in the win.
Both teams shot the ball well in the first, with HCU shooting at a 47.1% clip while UIW shot 50%. After playing one, the Cardinals were up 18-17. McCrary had nine of her 18 points in the first.
The Huskies continued to shoot the ball well in the second quarter, going 6-13 from the field. HCU outscored UIW 13-10 in the quarter to take a two-point lead into the break. Bell led the Cardinals in points with four in the quarter.
The Cardinals came out of the break hot, shooting 78.6% from the field and 66.7% from beyond the arc. UIW outscored HCU 28-17 in the quarter to pull ahead entering the fourth. McCrary had eight points in the quarter to lead the Cardinals.
The Cardinal defense stunted the Husky offense in the fourth, holding them to nine points in the quarter. UIW outscored the Huskies 13-9 in the final frame. The Cardinals fourth quarter defense helped earn them a 68-55 win.
UIW plays two home games next week. They'll start things on Thursday night against UNO before hosting SLU on Saturday afternoon.
