iSAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team defeated the University of New Orleans Privateers on Thursday evening at the McDermott Center.
Destiny Whitaker led all scorers in points with 20 points off the bench. Shiho Isono added 16, while Raimi McCrary and Brynn Lusby finished with nine. UIW's defense was stellar all night, holding the Privateers to a 33.3% field goal percentage on the night. The Cardinals also tallied five blocks and seven steals in the win.
Both teams shot the ball well in the first with UNO shooting at a 41.2% clip, while the UIW shot 46.2%. After playing one the Privateers were up 16-14. Isono had six of her 16 points in the first.
The Privateers continued to shoot the ball well in the second quarter going 6-15 from the field. UIW also continued to shoot the ball well, outscoring UNO 20-15 in the quarter to take a three-point lead into the break. Isono once again scored six in the quarter to lead the Cardinals in points with 12 entering the break.
The Cardinals came out of the break hot, shooting 53.8% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc. While UIW got hot, UNO came out slow, shooting 18.8% from the field in the third. The Cardinals outscored the Privateers 19-10 in the third to take a 12-point lead into the final frame.
UNO outscored UIW in the fourth 19-18, but it was too little too late as UIW came away with the 71-60 win for the team's fourth consecutive win.
UIW hosts the conference-leading Southeastern Lions on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.
