HOUSTON – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team came up short against Rice University, falling 70–62 on Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
UIW had three players score in double figures. Gwendlyn McGrew led the Cardinals with 12 points off the bench, adding five rebounds and two assists. Raimi McCrary and Destiny Whitaker each contributed 10 points, while McCrary also pulled down a team-high eight boards. Madison Cockrell paced the offense with five assists to go along with five points and three rebounds.
The Cardinals opened strong, taking a 16–10 lead after holding the Owls to just 3-for-17 shooting in the first quarter. UIW extended its advantage in the second frame, outscoring Rice 17–8 to head into halftime firmly in control.
Rice responded after the break, trimming the deficit with a 22–19 third-quarter push. The Owls then surged in the final period, shooting a game-high 50% from the field and outscoring UIW 30–10 to complete the comeback.
UIW returns to action on Wednesday, December 3, traveling to Fort Worth for a matchup against TCU. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
