LAKE CHARLES, La. – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team defeated the McNeese Cowgirls on Thursday evening at the Legacy Center.
The Cardinals had four players score in double-figures. The Cardinals leading scorer, Jorja Elliott, led UIW with 17 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Myra Bell and Brynn Lusby finished with 11 points. Shiho Isono recorded ten points off the bench to round out the Cardinals leading scorers.
After playing one UIW and McNeese were tied at 17-17. The Cowgirls shot 53.3% from the field, while the Cardinals shot 38.9%. Madison Cockrell led UIW in points with five in the quarter.
McNeese outscored UIW 16-15 in the second quarter to take a one-point lead into the break. Both the Cardinals and Cowgirls struggled in the second. UIW shot 29.4% from the field, while McNeese shot 37.5%. Cockrell led the team in points with seven at the break.
The Cowgirls came out of the break hot, shooting 60% from the field and 66.7% from beyond the arc. Although the Cardinals struggled shooting, the deficit was only three entering the fourth.
The Cardinals controlled the fourth, going on a 15-0 run to put the game out of reach. UIW outscored the Cowgirls 28-11 in the final frame while going 11-16 from the field and 2-4 from beyond the arc. Lusby had eight points in the quarter, while Elliott finished the quarter with seven. The Cardinals fourth quarter run helped earn them a 77-63 win.
UIW returns home on Saturday to take on HCU for Sneaker Day. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
