SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team's defense held the Vaqueros to a 30% field goal percentage to secure the team's second conference win in a row. 
 
Destiney Whitaker led all Cardinals with 15 points coming off the bench. Raimi McCray added eight points and six rebounds in a defensive-driven game. 
 
Both teams got off to a slow start, with UTRGV leading 9-8 entering the second quarter. Both teams shot under 30% in the opening quarter, and neither team converted a three-pointer. 

 
UIW outscored UTRGV 15-12 in the second quarter to take a two-point lead into the break. The Cardinal defense held the Vaqueros to a 35.7% field goal percentage while the offense shot 41.2%. At the break, the Cardinals were up 22-20.  
 
The second half was more of the same as the Vaqueros struggled offensively while the Cardinals began to drain shots and pull away. UIW outscored UTRGV 18-8 in the third quarter to head into the fourth quarter with a 40-28 lead. Entering the fourth quarter, the Vaqueros were 0-15 from beyond the arc and had yet to shoot over 40% from the field.  
 
The Vaqueros outscored the Cardinals 15-12 in the final frame, but the Cardinals' defense held them to a 35.3% shooting percentage. UIW was able to drain timely buckets to come away with the 52-43 win.  

UIW is back in action at home on Saturday against TAMCC at 1:00 p.m.
