SAN ANTONIO — The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team ended its 11-game losing streak by defeating the Islanders on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.
Jorja Elliott led all players with 16 points, going 6-11 from the field. The Cardinals had four players tally double-digit points in the win. Brynn Lusby and Madison Cockrell scored 12 and 11 points off the bench. Destiny Whitaker recorded 11 points and four rebounds.
Both teams got off to solid starts with the Islanders up 18-17 heading into the second quarter. TAMCC shot 63.6 % from the field in the opening quarter, while UIW shot at a 46.2% clip.
UIW outscored TAMCC 20-13 in the second quarter to take a six-point lead into the break. At the break, the Cardinals were up 37-31.
The Islanders controlled the third quarter, as they pulled within three entering the fourth quarter. TAMCC went 8-17 from the field in the quarter, while UIW went 6-14.
The Cardinals dominated the fourth, outscoring the Islanders 24-9, to secure the win. The Cardinal defense held the Islanders to a 25% field goal percentage in the final frame while UIW drained 8-17 shots. UIW defeated TAMCC 76-58. The win was the Cardinals' first over the Islanders since March 2019.
UIW is on the road for both conference games next week as they take on UNO and SLU.
