SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team lost to the Nicholls Colonels 88-82 in its first of a four-game homestand on Monday night.
 
Three players had 20+ points for UIW. Davion Bailey had a team high 22, Dylan Hayman and Jordan Pyke both had 20.
 
The Cardinals were solid in defense early, holding the Colonels to 33 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes of the game. At the same time UIW was able to share the load on the offensive side as Jayden Williams, Jalin Anderson, and Dylan Hayman all put the ball in the basket. However, the Cardinals were ablet to hit a three and trailed Nicholls 16-12.
 
The Cardinals struggles from deep continued through the first half only making one in the first 20 minutes. On the other end Rob Brown III went 6-for-6 from three and helped Nicholls extend their lead to 10 at the half, 30-40.
 
Coming out of the break both teams remained even, each scoring 20 points. Just as it looked like Nicholls was going to pull away, going on a 6-0 run, the Cards responded with a quick run of their own and cut into that lead.
 
The Colonels held onto the double-digit lead through most of the game. That was until Jalin Anderson scored inside and out to make it a single-digit deficit. With 30 second left Bailey knocked down a 3-pointer making it a seven-point game. On the next possession the Cards forced a steal and set Bailey up for one more three which making it 84-80. After a Nicholls split at the line and a UIW layup it was 85-82. Nicholls was able to convert on most of their final free throws and UIW fell by a final score of 88-82.
