SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team dropped two contests at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium. The Cardinals fell 1-0 to Southeastern Louisiana Friday and 2-1 to Northwestern State Sunday to open Southland play.
Game 1: UIW 0, SLU 1
UIW pressured early, recording seven shots in the opening 45 and getting four corners. The Cardinals could not find the back of the net and the Lady Lions did not develop many quality chances and the two sides were tied 0-0 at the break.
The Cardinals kept the pressure up in the second half, having eight shots. SLU gained a few more chances and in the 66th minute Hannah McCord ripped a shot from just outside the 18-yard box and into the back of the net.
The Cardinals garnered a few more chances but could not break through. Goalkeeper Erica Defferding recorded four saves on the day.
Game 2: UIW 1, NWST 2
The Demons got on the board early off a goal from Isabella Ruggiano in the 18th minute. UIW pressured and had six shots in the first half and with one second remaining in the 45th minute, freshman Peri Olmo slid a shot past the NSU goalkeeper off a cross from Meredith Caviglia.
Play was even in the second half, but UIW had more chances recording eight shots. The Demons held strong and developed a counterattack in the 89th minute where Emily Senatore scored the game winner as the Cardinals dropped a heartbreaker at home.
The Cardinals hit the road for a pair of matches in Louisiana as they face Nicholls on Friday, October 4th at 7 p.m. and McNeese State on October 6th at 1 p.m.
