SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team secured two road wins over Southland opponents over the weekend. The Cardinals defeated Nicholls 1-0 on Friday, October 4th and won 1-0 over McNeese on Sunday, October 6th. 

Game 1: UIW 1, Nicholls 0 

Play was even between the two sides in the first half with both teams generating chances. UIW had six shots and three corner kicks in the opening 45 compared to five shots and two corners for the Colonels. The Cardinals began to pressure more in the second half, outshooting Nicholls 6-2 and finally breaking through in the 83rd minute. Sophomore Alex Knutson scored her third goal of the year off a left-footed curler that bent into the top left corner as the Cardinals hung on to secure their first Southland win of the season. 

Game 2: UIW 1, McNeese 0 

Both teams tested each other early, with the Cardinals recording six shots and forcing three saves and McNeese having five shots and forcing two saves. Shortly into the second half, UIW drew a penalty and graduate student Sierra Wannamaker stepped up and buried it to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Sophomore goalkeeper Erica Defferding was strong in net, recording eight saves and securing her second straight clean sheet and fourth on the season as UIW left Louisiana with two wins.  

The UIW women's soccer team returns to Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium this weekend to host the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Friday, October 11th at 7 p.m. and Houston Christian on Sunday, October 13th at 1 p.m.
