SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team split two Southland Conference games this weekend. The Cardinals fell to UTRGV on Friday night 1-0 before defeating Houston Christian 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. 

Game 1: UIW 0, UTRGV 1 

UIW generated plenty of chances in the first half, getting six shots off compared to just one for the Vaqueros. The Cardinals continued to pressure in the second half, outshooting UTRGV 10-4. However, the Vaqueros capitalized on a counterattack in the 58th minute and Lisa Elowsson got on the end of a cross from Eld Linnea to score the eventual game winner.  

Game 2: UIW 2, HCU 1 

UIW once again controlled the pace of play and had more opportunities than the opposition. The Cardinals had five shots and the Huskies had none, but could not break through and the score was locked at 0-0. The second half was back-and-forth, but UIW struck first. Melissa Bailey hit a volley after an attempted clearance by HCU off a corner and found the bottom right corner of the net in the 75th minute. Two minutes later, the Huskies responded with a strike just outside the 18-yard box into the top left corner to level the match. The Cardinals got the last word, however, in the 81st minute when Sinead Duffy beat a defender down the left sideline and whipped in a cross that Sierra Wannamaker got on the end of with her right foot to give UIW a 2-1 lead and the win. 

The UIW women's soccer team will hit the road this weekend to face a pair of Southland Texas teams. The Cardinals will play at Stephen F. Austin Friday, October 18th at 5:30 p.m. and at Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 20th.
