HUNTSVILLE, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team finished 2-1 in the Bearkat Invitational at Sam Houston State University this past weekend. The Cardinals recorded wins over the host Bearkats and the Lady Panthers of PVAMU.
Game 1: UIW 0, SFA 3
The Ladyjacks and Cardinals played to three close sets. The Southland Conference preseason favorites defeated UIW 25-21, 25-19, and 25-19. Freshman Calissa Allison led the Cardinals in kills (13) and in digs (12). Last year's leader in blocks for the Cardinals picked up right where she left off as Kade Thomas recorded four blocks in the loss.
Game 2: UIW 3, SHSU 0
UIW's first win of the season came against the Bearkats in a sweep. The Cardinals won 25-21, 25-19 and came from behind to win set three 25-23. Allison and K. Thomas led UIW in kills with nine. Freshman Teyhlor Thomas was a force at the net, recording six blocks. Allison led the team in assists with 16 and Risa Sena totaled 16 digs in the win.
Game 3: UIW 3, PVAMU 1
The Cardinals showed its dominance in the win against the Lady Panthers winning sets one, two and four with scores of 25-15, 25-22, and 25-12. Sena led the way in kills with 15. T. Thomas recorded two more blocks and Audrey Patton tallied 16 digs enroute to the dominate win.
Volleyball is back in action Friday, September 6 and Saturday, September 7 at the UTSA Invitational.
