SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team finished at a 1-1 draw against Tarleton University and fell to UTSA 1-0 in the Alamo City Showdown at Toyota Field.   

Game 1: UIW 1, TAR 1 

Both teams traded shots in the first half, but neither was able to convert, and we entered halftime knotted at 0-0. Goalkeeper Erica Defferding recorded four saves in the first half. 

Captain Ellie Mai Sanford scored the Cardinals' first goal with a header in the 64th minute. Kiana Villa recorded the assist. In the 72nd minute, the Texans tied the game at 1-1.  

Defferding added a save in the second half to finish the game with five. 

Game 2: UIW 0, UTSA 1 

The Alamo City Showdown entered halftime at a 0-0 draw. Both offenses were on the attack early on. Defferding recorded six saves in the first half. The lone goal of the game came from the penalty circle in the 52nd minute to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 win. Defferding finished the game with 12 saves while facing 29 shots (13 on goal). Three Cardinals recorded shots on goal in the loss.   

UIW is on the road this week as they travel to Prairie View A&M University for a matchup on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Cardinals then take on Texas State on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in San Marcos.
