ABILENE, TEXAS - The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team lost 9-5 to Abilene Christian University (ACU) on Tuesday night at Crutcher Scott Field.
ACU took an early 2-0 advantage in the second, scoring on a fielder's choice and RBI single.
A passed ball in the third allowed the Wildcats to extend the lead to 3-0.
Rey Mendoza put the Cardinals on the board in the fourth on a two-run single, bringing the score to 3-2. Later in the inning, ACU singled in a run to extend the lead to 4-2.
The Cardinals pulled within one in the fifth on an RBI single by Cameron Caley. Tyler Cowan scored on the play to make the score 4-3.
After a scoreless sixth, the Wildcats scored two in the seventh to push the lead to 6-3.
Cowan singled in a run in the eighth to pull the Cardinals within two, 6-4.
ACU responded with a three-run eighth inning to extend the lead to 9-4.
The Cardinals added a run in the ninth on an error to bring the final score to 9-5.
UIW returns home this weekend to host Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game series. The Cardinals will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, May 12.
