SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team lost the series finale to Nicholls 10-7 on Sunday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The loss gave the Colonels a 2-1 series win over the Cardinals.
UIW put up a crooked number in the first, tallying four runs in the first frame. Grant Randall drove in the game's first run on an RBI double to center. Rey Mendoza drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to extend the Cardinals lead. Daniel Calabrese doubled in a run, and a bases-loaded walk by Ryan Scott brought the score to 4-0.
Dalton Beck crushed a two-run homer over the left field wall in the second to extend the Cardinals lead to 6-0.
The Colonels got on the board in the third, scoring four to bring the score to 6-4.
Nicholls scored a run on an RBI single, and a two-run homer later in the fourth gave Nicholls a 7-6 lead. Later in the inning, JD Gregson tied the game at 7-7 on a fielder's choice.
Nicholls retook the lead in the fifth on an infield groundout to bring the score to 8-7.
A double to center extended the Colonels' lead to 9-7 through six.
A wild pitch in the eighth pushed the lead to 10-7 for Nicholls.
The Cardinals went down in order in the eighth and ninth, bringing the final score to 10-7.
Cameron Caley finished the game 5-5 with a triple and four singles.
The Cardinals are on the road on Tuesday, May 7, against Abilene Christian. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
