SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team was defeated by Nicholls 7-6 on Saturday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The Cardinals surrendered the go-ahead three-run home run in the ninth to even the series at one apiece.
Nicholls got on the board first, scoring on a solo shot to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead in the second. Later in the inning, the Cardinals hung five to take a 5-1 lead after playing two. Ryder Hernandez got the scoring started for the Cardinals, tying the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly to right. Cameron Caley drove in JD Gregson on an RBI single to right to give UIW a 2-1 lead. Dalton Beck's 19th double of the season drove in three to extend the Cardinals lead to 5-1. Beck's double broke the record for most doubles in a single season.
A single up the middle in the fourth for the Colonels brought the score to 5-2. Later in the inning, Beck homered to straightaway center to give UIW a 6-2 lead.
Nicholls scored two runs in the fifth to pull within two, 6-4.
The Colonels took the lead in the ninth on a go-ahead three-run home run, bringing the final score to 7-6.
The Cardinals look to take the series finale on Sunday, May 5 at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
