SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Nicholls on Friday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The Cardinals won the game 7-6, with Josh Salinas recording his fifth win of the season.     

Nicholls got on the board first, scoring on a homer to left to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead in the second. 

Grant Randall drew a bases loaded walk in the third to tie the game at 1-1. 

The Cardinals took the lead on a bases loaded walk by Ryder Hernandez in the fourth. Later in the inning, Cameron Caley singled with the bases loaded to drive in three, and Randall singled in a run to bring the score to 6-1. 

The Colonels doubled in a run in the sixth to bring the score to 6-2.  

Tyler Cowan drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh to push the Cardinals lead to 7-2. 

Nicholls scored four runs in the final two innings, but Adam Byrd shut the door in the ninth to secure the win and his third save.  

Salinas tossed seven plus innings, allowing just five hits while striking out nine in the win. 

The Cardinals and Colonels are back at it Saturday, May 4 at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
