SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team lost game three to Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) 12-11 on Sunday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
The Lions jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the third on three RBI singles. Later in the inning, Cameron Caley drove in a run to bring the score to 3-1 after three.
SLU added to the lead in the fourth on a two-run homer. Later in the inning, Daniel Calabrese responded with his own two-run homer, bringing the score to 5-3.
The Lions offense put up five runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 10-3.
Two RBI singles for SLU in the seventh pushed the lead to 12-3. Dalton Beck crushed a grand slam over the right field wall to pull the Cardinals within five. Rey Mendoza belted a solo homer later in the inning to cut the deficit to 12-8.
In his final home game in a Cardinal uniform, Grant Randall sent a three-run homer to left to pull the Cardinals within one, 12-11, in the ninth. UIW got the tying run on base, but the comeback fell short.
The Cardinals take a short trip to UTSA for a midweek game on Tuesday, May 14. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
