Baseball Looks to Extend Five-Game Win Streak

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team is on a five-game win streak and begins a four-game homestead at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B, this week. The Cardinals play a midweek game against Texas State at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16 before hosting Southland Conference foe, Northwestern State University for a three-game series on April 19-21.  
 
UIW
  • The Cardinals are currently 20-14 overall and 5-4 in SLC play following a series sweep over McNeese State University last weekend and a Tuesday night win over Rice to go 4-0 last week. UIW has now moved up to fourth in the current conference standings.
  • Dalton Beck led UIW, batting .632 with 12 hits, 11 RBIs, and four home runs last week to earn himself Southland Conference Hitter of the Week. Beck has the second-highest batting average and third-highest slugging percentage in the conference. He's first in the conference with 60 hits on the season.
  • Cameron Caley leads the team in runs scored with 45, good for second in the SLC. Caley also leads the conference in walks, taking first a whopping 41 times this season.
  • Josh Salinas is 4-1 on the season through 40 innings pitched. He's tallied 41 strikeouts, two complete games, and one shutout through his eight starts on the mound. 
  • As a team, the Cardinals put up numbers last week totaling 50 hits, 39 runs, 28 RBIs, and eight home runs.
  • On a five-game win streak, the Cardinals look to defend Sullivan Field against Texas State and Northwestern State University this week.
 
TEXAS STATE
  • The Bobcats are 18-19 overall and 6-9 in the Sunbelt Conference. Last week, Texas State dropped a 2-1 series against the University of Louisiana Monroe but picked up a huge 7-3 victory at Texas.
  • Infielder, Daylan Pena is batting .331 for the Bobcats, totaling 41 hits, 24 runs, 12 doubles, and 32 RBIs on the season.
  • Texas State is currently eleventh in the Sunbelt Conference standings.
 
NORTHWESTERN STATE
  • The Demons are 13-23 overall and 6-6 in Southland Conference play. Last week, Northwestern State took the first two games against Nicholls State to end the series, 2-1. The team will host LSU-Alexandria before coming to San Antonio for the three-game series.
  • Reese Lipoma is batting .301 for the Demons with 44 hits, 31 runs, 24 RBIs, and eight doubles on the season. Chase Prestwich has thrown for 44 innings, totaling 41 strikeouts for a 3-3 record through nine starts.
  • Following the series win over the Colonels, the Demons are currently sitting at No. 6 in the SLC standings.
