SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Texas Southern University (TSU), 6-0, on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
The Cardinals played a great game from start to finish on the back of pitcher Isaiah Zavala. Zavala pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out a career high 13 batters. Zavala's 13 strikeouts also tied the record for strikeouts in a single game by a UIW pitcher.
Offensively, JD Gregson got things started in the home half of the first on a two-run shot over the left field wall. The homer gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead after one.
Tony DeJesus drove in a run in the second to extend UIW's lead to 3-0.
In the third, Ryder Hernandez scorched a ball down the right field line to record a two-run triple to bring the lead to 5-0.
Cameron Caley drove in the Cardinals' final run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
UIW and Texas Southern close out its series Sunday, March 10 at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
