SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Texas Southern University (TSU), 11-4, on Friday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
The Tigers struck first in the top of the first, driving in two unearned runs to take an early 2-0 lead. The Cardinals responded in the home half of the first, tying the game at 2-2. Cameron Caley smoked a ball over the right field fence and Ryan Scott later scored on a throwing error.
TSU singled in a run in the third to retake the lead at 3-2. In the home half of the frame, Dalton Beck doubled in a run to tie the game at 3-3 after three.
After two scoreless innings, the Tigers took the lead in the sixth on a single up the middle, bringing the score to 4-3. UIW responded by hanging six runs in the bottom of the sixth. An RBI double by Matt Marlow got the scoring started, followed by an RBI triple from Grant Randall. An error, two bases loaded walks, and a hit by pitch (HBP) with the bases loaded gave the Cardinals a commanding 9-4 lead.
Beck drove in the final two runs in the seventh on a two-run double to right center.
On the mound, Brayden Berry picked up the win, allowing no runs on one hit. Adam Byrd recorded the final eight outs, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out four batters.
UIW and Texas Southern are back Saturday, March 9 at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
