Baseball Wins High-Scoring Affair

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), 23-20, on Wednesday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The Cardinals tallied the most runs scored in a game in program history since turning Division I in 2013.

PVAMU drew first, scoring in the top of the first on a solo homer. Later in the inning, the Cardinals took the lead, hanging five runs in the home half of the first. JD Gregson walked to drive in a run before Sam Tormos reached on an error to score a runner and Tyler Cowan was HBP to send another across home. Then, Weldon Sherrell walked to drive in the Cardinals fourth run of the inning, and in his second at-bat of the inning, Cameron Caley singled in a run to make the score 5-1.

The Panthers responded with a five-run inning to retake the lead 6-5 in the second. UIW then scored three runs in the home half of the second to reclaim an 8-6 lead. Gregson and Ryder Hernandez recorded RBI singles, while Sherrell drove in his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly.

The Cardinals hung six runs in the third to take a commanding 14-6 lead after three. Dalton Beck scored on a passed ball and Cowan recorded a sacrifice fly to drive in a run. Sherrell cleared the bases on a two-run double and Caley drove in Sherrell on a two-run blast to end the inning.

Gregson sent a two-run homer over the wall in the fourth to give UIW a 16-6 lead after four.

PVAMU scored 14 unanswered runs between the fifth and seventh innings, taking a 20-16 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Caley drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to pull the Cardinals within three and Sterling Sutcliffe then tied the game at 20-20 on a three-run missile over the right field wall.

Representing the go-ahead run on third, Hernandez stole home in the eighth to give UIW a 21-20 lead. Cowan later scored on a wild pitch and Sutcliffe drove in the game's final run on an RBI double, to bring the final score to 23-20.

UIW is set to host Texas Southern this weekend, March 8-10 at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with a 1 p.m. start time on Sunday.
