SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), 7-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
The Cardinals got the scoring started in the second on an RBI double by JD Gregson. Gregson's frozen rope down the left field line gave UIW a 1-0 lead after two.
UTRGV responded in the third, taking its first lead on a double down the line, bringing the score to 2-1. Later in the inning, the Cardinals retook the lead on a two-run double by Ryan Scott to give them a 3-2 lead after three.
Cameron Caley added to UIW's lead with a solo homer in the fourth to extend the Cardinals' lead to 4-2.
The Vaqueros would pull within one on a sacrifice fly in the fifth to bring the score to 4-3, but UIW put up two runs to extend the lead to 6-3.
The Cardinals drove in one more run in the seventh and UTRGV scored two in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as UIW walked away with the 7-5 win.
UIW stays home to host Prairie View A&M on Wednesday, March 6 at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
