Baseball Looks to Bounce Back in Five-Game Week

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team hosts five home games this week, kicking off the week with UTRGV on Tuesday, March 5 at 2 p.m. The Cardinals then host Prairie View A&M on Wednesday, March 6 at 2 p.m. UIW closes out the week against Texas Southern in a three-game series March 8-10. All games with be played at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.

UIW 

  • Infielder Ryan Scott has 13 hits with seven RBIs and ten runs scored to lead the team, batting .500. Outfielder/LHP Dalton Beck is another key contributor for the Cardinals with 19 hits, three home runs, and 13 RBIs this season while batting .413. Outfielder/DH Cameron Caley is tied second in Division I with 16 walks. Infielder Grant Randall is tied second in Division I with three triples. 

  • Josh Salinas is 1-0 this season in three starts. In 13 innings of work Salinas has allowed four earned runs on seven hits, while striking out 16 batters  

  • This past week the Cardinals went 1-3 with a midweek loss against Tarleton and a 1-2 series loss against ULM. Three weeks into the season, the Cardinals are ranked number one in triples with ten and number ten in runs scored with 123. 

Scouting the Vaqueros 

  • UTRGV is 6-4 this season after going 1-3 this past week. 

  • After finishing 30-26 last season, the Vaqueros were picked to finish sixth in the WAC. 

  • Steven Lancia is batting .485 this season with 16 hits, seven RBIs and seven runs scored. Jacob Limas is 2-0 this season, striking out 14 batters while giving up one earned run in 14 innings pitched. 

Scouting the Panthers 

  • PVAMU is 6-5 this season after going 0-4 this past week. 

  • After finishing 20-37 last season, the Panthers were picked to finish second in the SWAC West. 

  • Garrison Weiss leads the team in hits with 17 and a batting average of .415. Michael Dews is 1-0 this season, allowing nine earned runs on 20 hits.  

Scouting the Tigers 

  • Texas Southern is 4-8 this season after going 2-3 this past week. 

  • After finishing 31-22 last season, the Tigers were picked to finish fourth in the SWAC West. 

  • Jason Lazo leads the team in hits with nine and a batting average of .290. Domenic Martinez is 0-2 this season, allowing 11 earned runs on 13 hits.
