SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team picked up its first conference win of the season, defeating Texas A&M Corpus Christi (TAMCC), 12-2, on Friday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
The Cardinals were clicking on all cylinders putting up 12 runs on 12 hits, while only surrendering two hits. On the mound, Josh Salinas was electric, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four batters in seven innings of work.
After falling behind 2-0 through three the Cardinals' bats came alive. UIW took a 3-2 lead in the fourth with RBI singles from Daniel Calabrese and Grant Randall.
The Cardinals put up seven runs on seven hits in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Cameron Caley, Ryan Scott, Dalton Beck, Tony DeJesus and Jamey Richey all singled in runs in the inning. JD Gregson capped off the inning with a two-run double down the left field line to bring the score to 10-2.
UIW scored two runs in the seventh on wild pitches to bring the final score to 12-2.
The Cardinals and Islanders face off again on Saturday, March 22. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
