Edinburg, Texas - The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team was defeated by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) on Tuesday evening, 5-4.
The Cardinals drew first blood, scoring in the first on a bases loaded walk, bringing the score to 1-0.
UTRGV took a 2-1 lead in the second, scoring two on a single up the middle.
After two scoreless innings UIW retook the lead in the fifth. RBI singles from Dalton Beck and Tony DeJesus gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, the Vaqueros tied the game at 3-3 on a single through the right side.
Beck broke the 3-3 tie in the eighth on an RBI single to left to give UIW a 4-3 lead.
The Vaqueros scored two in the ninth to walk it off, winning 5-4.
UIW opens conference play against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Friday, March 22 at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
