THIBODAUX, La – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team fell in a close game to the Nicholls Colonels 82-92 Monday night on the road.
Dylan Hayman recorded his first career double-double on with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Sky Wicks was one rebound shy of joining Hayman scoring 22 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
The starters carried the load for the Cardinals in the first half, scoring all but three of the teams 34 points in the opening 20 minutes. UIW performed well offensively, as well as matched the Colonels in rebounds and turnovers. The difference came behind the arc, as Nicholls was able to convert on 12 3-pointers in the half. The score at the break was 47-34.
The second half was more of the same. The Cardinals played decently well but couldn't stop the barrage of 3-pointers from Nicholls and got down by as many as 29 points in with 8:31 remaining in the game. Two minutes later, UIW came alive, going on a 20-2 run cutting the lead to nine with just under a minute in the second half.
The Cardinals were forced to intentionally foul down the stretch. Nicholls broke their nearly four-minute scoring drought from the line and escape with a 92-82 win
