Baseball Amid its Best Start in Division I Era

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team hosts Tarleton State in a midweek matchup on Feb. 27 at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B at 2 p.m. The Cardinals then go on the road to take on the University of Louisiana at Monroe in a three-game series March 1-3.

UIW 

  • The Cardinals are 7-1 so far this season, the program's best start since 2013 where UIW was still competing in the Division II Lone Star Conference. UIW leads Division I in triples with eight. The Cardinal are also third in runs scored, seventh in hits, eighth in batting average, and fifteenth in home runs. 

  • Outfielder/LHP Dalton Beck has 14 hits, three home runs, and 12 RBIs this season to lead the team, batting .483. Beck and Rey Mendoza are tied for eighth in Division I in runs scored with 14. DH/Outfielder Cameron Caley is another key player for the Cardinals, bringing in 13 hits, three home runs, one triple, and 14 RBIs. Caley leads Division I in walks with 14. Shortstop Grant Randall leads Division I in triples with three. 

  • Isaiah Zavala is 1-0 after a stellar performance on Saturday against Alcorn State. In the win, Zavala pitched a complete game shutout, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out eight batters.  

  • In a five-game week the Cardinals went 4-1 with its lone loss coming against No. 8 Texas A&M. UIW put up double digits in each of its wins this past week, defeating UIC 22-7 on Wednesday, and sweeping Alcorn State 14-4, 15-0, and 18-1.  

Scouting the Texans 

  • Tarleton State is 6-2 so far this season after sweeping Northern Colorado this past weekend. 

  • After finishing 26-26 last season, the Texans were picked to finish ninth in the WAC. 

  • Brandon Howell is batting .500 so far this season with seven hits, ten RBIs and nine runs scored. Matt Haley is 1-1 this season, striking out six batters while giving up two earned runs in 9.2 innings pitched. 

Scouting the Warhawks 

  • ULM is 3-4 so far this season coming off a series loss to Murray State. 

  • After finishing 17-37 last season, the Warhawks were picked to finish thirteenth in the Sun Belt Conference. 

  • Colby Lundsford leads the team in hits with five and a batting average of .500. Hollis Huff is 0-0 this season, allowing one run on zero hits.
