SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Alcorn State in seven innings, 18-1, on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B to finish the sweep. The Cardinals ended the week on a four-game win streak after totaling 72 runs, 63 hits, 63 RBIs and 10 home runs through five games played, four of which were only seven innings.
On the mound, Garrett Coiner got the start allowing just one run on one hit while striking out four in three innings of work. Ryan Schlotzhauer and EJ Garcia each pitched two innings to close out the game. They combined to allow no runs on three hits and recorded three strikeouts apiece.
The Cardinal bats continued to produce, and this afternoon was no exception. UIW scored the game's first run in the second on a fielder's choice to make the score 1-0.
The Braves tied the game up in the third at 1-1 on a bloop single to right. Later in the inning, the Cardinals put up six runs to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Rey Mendoza got it started with a missile to right. Sterling Sutcliffe later singled in a run, followed by Ryder Hernandez who singled in two. Grant Randall tripled in a run and later scored on a wild pitch to cap off the six-run inning.
UIW followed up its six-run third with a six-run fourth. Sutcliffe scored on a fielder's choice to kick off the inning. Cameron Caley, JD Gregson, and Ryan Scott each recorded RBI singles to extend the Cardinals lead to 13-1.
Hernandez tripled in a run in the fifth and Randall drove in Hernandez on a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 15-1 after five.
Sutcliffe capped the scoring off in the sixth on a three-run homer to extend UIW's lead to 18-1.
Garcia struck out two in the seventh to bring the final score to 18-1.
The Cardinals host Tarleton State Tuesday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
