SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Alcorn State in seven innings, 15-0, on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B to clinch the series.
Once again, the Cardinals' pitching was virtually unhittable as starter Isaiah Zavala went the distance to secure the win. Zavala allowed no runs on two hits while striking out eight and facing two over the minimum in his stellar performance.
Offensively, UIW had no struggles as they took an early 7-0 in the first and never looked back. JD Gregson doubled in a run to get the scoring started. Dalton Beck and Rob Liddington Jr. would both record RBI singles before Tony DeJesus unloaded on a pitch sending it well over the left field wall. The three-run homer from DeJesus would cap off a seven-run bottom of the first for the Cardinals.
Cam Caley and Grant Randall both scored on an error in the third to extend the Cardinals lead. Later in the inning, Ryan Scott singled in two to bring the score to 12-0.
Randall drove in two in the sixth on a two-run triple and he would later score on a wild pitch to stretch UIW's lead to 15-0.
Zavala struck out the final two batters of the game to secure the 15-0 complete game shutout.
The Cardinals close out the series with Alcorn State Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
