SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Alcorn State in seven innings, 14-4, on Friday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
Josh Salinas was electric on the mound today. Through six innings, he surrendered only one run on two hits while striking out seven batters.
After going down 1-0 in the third, the Cardinal bats came alive in the fourth. A Grant Randall triple, a Cameron Caley double, and a JD Gregson homer put UIW ahead 5-1.
The Cardinals added two runs in the fifth on passed balls to extend the lead to 7-1.
UIW broke it open in the sixth, driving in six runs on three hits to stretch the lead to 13-1.
The Braves scored three in the seventh, but Rey Mendoza would send everyone home early in the seventh on a no-doubter to right field bringing the final score to 14-4.
UIW and Alcorn State battle again tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
