SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team erupted against the University of Illinois – Chicago (UIC) with 22 runs in only seven innings on Wednesday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
The Cardinals went up by ten in the first and never looked back. JD Gregson got the scoring started with an RBI single and Dalton Beck followed driving in the second run on a sacrifice fly to center. A bases loaded walk drove in another Cardinal and Grant Randall cleared the bases with a grand slam, bringing the score to 7-0. Cameron Caley followed Randall with a homer of his own to go back-to-back. Rey Mendoza doubled down the right line to drive in a run and Beck singled in the tenth run of the inning on a single to right.
The Flames added one to the board in the second, but Caley singled to left field to extend the Cardinals' lead to 11-1.
In the third, UIC drove in a run, making the score 11-2.
Caley nailed his second homer of the game in the fifth to extend UIW's lead to 12-2.
In the home half of the fifth, the Cardinals drove in ten runs once more. A bases loaded walk and a two-run single by Tony DeJesus got the scoring started. Caley drove in two with a single down the right field line. Gregson drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Beck and Mendoza went back-to-back to bring the score to 22-2 after five.
In the sixth the Flames drove in five to bring the final score to 22-7 in seven innings.
UIW stays home to host Alcorn State this weekend at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
